Oil & Gas Seminar in Houston, Texas
AFL Telecommunications holds a technology seminar in Houston, Texas, April 3, 2012 on fusion splicing and fiber preparation technology for oil and gas applications. Products presented include a new portable and lightweight field recoater from NYFORS.
Being the smallest and most compact recoater on the market, the new MiniCoater from NYFORS has been designed specifically with the oil and gas industry´s need for portable fusion splicing equipment in mind.
Since it may be operated by battery power, and because of it's small size and reliability, it is ideally suited for operation in remote and harsh field environments such as ships and oil drilling platforms, and for other applications where a high degree of portability is required.
The MiniCoater is presented at the seminar along with other new exciting fusion splicing and fiber preparation solutions for oil and gas applications. For more information about the seminar, please contact AFL Telecommunications.

NYFORS introduces a new family of fiber optical recoaters for flexible applications
Press Information January 24, 2012
NYFORS introduces a new generation fiber optical recoaters at the SPIE Photonics West 2012 conference in San Francisco, USA. Designed to meet the varying demands of today’s fiber optics industry, the NYFORS Recoater 2-series is a versatile product platform that can easily be adapted to meet different recoating needs and customer requirements.
Three different models – the manual MiniCoater and ReCoater, and the fully automatic AutoCoater – can be selected with different types of recoating moulds – rigid moulds in a fixed mounting or quickly interchangeable soft silicone moulds. Both the ReCoater and the AutoCoater may be selected with optional linear proof testing or rotary tensile testing capability.
For standardized industrial operations, a long-lasting rigid mould has been developed to facilitate high-volume automatic production recoating. Due to the robustness of the design, mould replacement will seldom if ever be required, enabling continuous factory operation over many years with very little in the way of routine maintenance requirements. For recoating operations where flexibility is required to meet many different recoating needs and specifications, exchangeable silicone moulds is another available option.
“The combination of durable, rigid recoating moulds and soft silicone moulds, as well as the capability to rapidly change recoating compounds, underscores the flexibility of NYFORS recoaters as the most versatile and easily adaptable product platform in the world”, said Erik Böttcher, NYFORS vice president. “Development of these technological solutions have been facilitated by research grants awarded to NYFORS by the Swedish government in strong competition with other research performing small and medium sized companies. For this recognition of NYFORS technological capabilities and potential we are of course very proud.”
Short curing times of about 3 seconds are achieved through the highly efficient UV LED light source. In automatic recoating, the typical cycle time is about 15 seconds from initial fiber positioning through the concluding linear proof test. Recoating compounds can be rapidly changed and the system is compatible with low index resins used in fiber laser manufacturing.
A presentation of the new NYFORS recoating platform and other new products, will be held during the conference:
Date: Thursday 26 January 2012
Time: 02.30 PM
Location: South Hall

NYFORS releases improved interferometers for fiber end-face inspection, with support for three-dimensional surface topography reconstruction
Press Information January 24, 2012
NYFORS introduces a new generation of cleave meters – the CleaveMeter 2 and CleaveMeter 3D – that simplifies and increases the precision in end-face inspection of cleaved, polished or lensed optical fibers. Included in the platform is support for complete, three-dimensional surface topography reconstruction, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of the cleaving process.
In addition to providing conventional interferometric end-face inspection functionality, the new cleave meter platform from NYFORS also includes recently developed features that allows the surface topography of the fiber end to be completely reconstructed from the fringe patterns.
This information is presented graphically to the operator as an easy-to-interpret, three-dimensional image of the fiber end. By rotating the image and adjusting scale and contrast, the surface quality and cleave angle at different points can be analyzed in close detail. While this capability is always important to cleave quality analysis, it is especially well suited for analyzing cleaving of fibers with complicated structures such as polarization maintaining fibers and mico-structured fibers.
“NYFORS’ fiber end-face inspection instruments provides research, development and production engineers with a unique and user-friendly tool to help optimize complicated cleaving processes in demanding applications”, said Erik Böttcher, NYFORS vice president. “These capabilities are enabled by proprietary software solutions and technology developed by our engineering team in Stockholm, Sweden, during the last year.”
Software-compensation for fiber holder error allows for high-precision measurements with in-picture presentation of the cleave angle. This enables operator independence and easy process verification in production environments.
The optical system is based on a high-end camera with true megapixel resolution and high sensitivity, yielding excellent image quality at high frame rates and high magnification. High precision optics results in sharp and clear pictures with very little aberration.
Adaptor plates are available for both perpendicular and angled cleave measurements. The mechanical design is compatible with all NYFORS automatic fiber cleavers and accepts the fiber holders used with those machines as well as those of major splicer manufacturers.

NYFORS supports homeless people in Stockholm
Corporate social responsibility for us means to take social, ethical, economical and environmental responsibility for our business and to make a contribution to the development of society.
Like previous years we support Situation Stockholm, a non-profit organisation that exists to offer homeless people in Stockholm the opportunity to earn a legitimate income and a chance to rebuild their lives. The organisation produces and distributes a monthly magazine, which homeless street vendors buy and re-sell, thereby earning them a profit for every sold copy.
Any post investment profit generated through the sale of the magazine or the sale of advertising is passed on to charity work within the organization.
The organisation currently supports a large number of homeless people in Stockholm and the magazine is read by over 125 000 people every month.

NYFORS releases AutoCleaver LDF in FITEL edition
Press information 20 July 2010
NYFORS introduces the AutoCleaver LDF™ fiber cleaver in a special FITEL edition, designed to be used with FITEL S183 and S184 series fusion splicers. Based on our proven and patented cleaving technology, this automated precision fiber cleaver produces consistent cleaves with mirror quality end-face finish on large diameter fibers from 230 μm up to 1000 μm in diameter.
In the FITEL edition it is now fully compatible with the FITEL S183-PM, S183-K, S183-PMII and S184-PM fusion splicers. Since the cleaver accepts standard FITEL S710S fiber holders, the cleaved fiber can be directly transferred to the splicer with no risk of touching or damaging the fiber end, making the fiber preparation process both easier and more efficient.
For smaller fiber dimensions FITEL fusion splicers can be used with the NYFORS standard AutoCleaver™.
NYFORS fiber cleavers AutoCleaver and AutoCleaver LDF are also compatible with Ericsson and Fujikura fusion splicers. Fiber holders for other fusion splicers are available upon request.
